Occupational Health Nursing

Occupational health nurses are leaders of public health and care in the workplace. They specialise in the care and well-being of people at work.Occupational health nurses are qualified and registered nurses or midwives, many of whom have chosen to gain additional training and qualifications as specialist community public health nurses (SCPHN - OHN). Their additional training in public health enables them to assess the health needs of individuals, families and the wider community to promote good health and prevent illness.

Modern roles of OHNs are as diverse as clinicians to educators, case managers to corporate directors and consultants. The OHN’s responsibilities have expanded immensely to encompass not only the responsibilities previously stated but also a wide range of job duties, including but not limited to:
Case management: OHNs routinely coordinate and manage the care of ill and injured workers. Their roles as case managers have grown more sophisticated with the coordination an…

Evidence based practice (EBP) is the integration of best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values which when applied by practitioners will ultimately lead to improved patient outcome.

To Have and To Hold

Anne Bennett, the so called 'author of historic romance' is from Birmingham. Life was not fair then for her and was injured severely in an accident.  Unable to continue her career as a teacher any longer as a wheelchair user, she began to write.Everyone people has a story to tell. Many of the characters and situations were drawn from places she knew, the culture in which she had been reared, the colorful characters in the neighborhood and the stories her parents told her, sprinkled with a large dose of imagination. She turned out to be writer of her own kind. Her books are subtle, deep, slow but addicting. One of her works "To Have and To Hold" is a story about Carmel Duffy, a Nurse. Apart from all the historic legacy, gentle romance and terrific war time descriptions, one thing which is to be spoken of highly is the Life of a Nurse portrayed throughout this book. Carmel begins her Nurse Training and the hard work everyone puts up risking their lives to save the vic…

Nursing Technologies: Innovation and Implementation

Healthcare system recognizes that patient education is crucial to recovery and reduces costly readmissions to hospitals, the role of nurses continues to expand. Nurses are now responsible for following up with patients to provide greater resources to those with chronic conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease. By working with the patients to monitor their conditions, nurses play a role well beyond the hospital. Care coordination fits well with many nurses’ interest in bedside care and their focus on the whole patient rather than an episodic problem. The increase in nurses seeking higher education is partly due to a report released in 2010 by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) called “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change and Advancing Health.” The report recommended that nurses should practice at the top of license, achieve higher levels of education, and act as full partners with physicians. The same report also set a goal for 80 percent of nurses have baccalaureate degrees by 202…

Uh-oh. You woke up with a burning sore throat, and your mom says you need to go have it checked. But before the doctor even makes you say aaahhh, there's probably someone else you'll see first: the nurse. Nurses are important people. Not only are they often the first health care professional that a sick or injured person sees, but they do their job in all kinds of settings — from local hospitals to faraway military bases. Some even work in the sky or at sea, helping to transport sick people on planes or caring for passengers on ships. In fact, anywhere in the world you can find someone who needs health care, you can probably find a nurse. Whatever type of work they do, the best nurses have one thing in common: they love interacting with people. That's because nurses do more than provide hands-on health care. They also give patients and their families compassionate support at a time when they need it most. Nurses are …
